How to Help Curb Your Westie Barking in 5 Easy Steps.- I have fallen out with the neighbor more than once, over our Westie barking. I keep telling her that it is a perfectly natural and normal behavior in dogs, but that doesn’t seem to satisfy her. God I wish she would get a life. However he does seem to go on a bit at times, because he is a terrier and it's the nature of the beast. But realistically you can't expect your Westie to turn completely mute.Here are 5 steps which I have found has helped to curb the west highland dogs barking habit. 1) This first step does seem so logical, but try and establish why your westie dog is barking. It might something like a separation or grooming issue, but knowing the cause can help so much to setting up a cure.</P> 2) Praise your west highland terrier for barking once (This is important) by saying "Good Dog" If he keeps barking tell him/her to be quiet in a loud but firm voice. 3) Have a special treat at hand and wave this in front of the Westies nose. Believe it, the dog will be quiet. Would You not concentrate on your favourite sweet if it was in front of you. 4) If he is quiet for 4 seconds let him have the treat. If he starts to bark again after he has eaten the treat, wave another treat in front of him. If he barks again before the 4 seconds is up, tell him to be quiet as before and in a firm voice. Give him the treat once the quiet period of 4 seconds has elapsed. Your Westie will soon learn (They are very intelligent and fun loving animals), that after a certain period of quiet time, he will be rewarded. 5) Increase this period to 8 seconds and then to 16 seconds and so on. Over a period of time you should see a significant increase in the reduction of the barking

How To Keep Your Westie Dog White? - Our Westie dog called Pepper is lovely and white ( Ops - I'm looking at that westie photo again). To be honest, he has stuck his head in a bucket of soil or it looks that way. I'm afraid that it’s bath time again young man. God you were so cute when you were a puppy. In keeping him reasonably clean and white; in the overall west highland grooming and health process; I find that brushing him regularly helps greatly, because the dirt and any dead hairs, usually fall off. I would recommend that you try and do this once a week. It then becomes a habit and as we all know, habits are easier to follow. This is just part of the process in how to groom a westie. In the washing process, my wife uses a shampoo especially formulated for white dogs and this seems to do the best job. It is recommended that for a west highland terrier, they should be groomed every 6-8 weeks and especially in the summer. You have to to imagine what it would be like wearing a fur coat in the hot summer days. It's cooler with the westie haircut. We have noticed that Pepper's face has turned a rusty sort of colour under his jaw. Our vet has told us, that this is due to the hair being wet too often. As he seems to drink copious amounts of water, I try to dry this part as often as I can, following the vets instructions. I have found that Pepper has little black grains( for want of a better description) in the corner of each of his eyes on most days and therefore will remove them. My last recommendation in this overall grooming process to keep our westies at optimum health, I have also found that his scratching decreases if I gave him cooling tablets. Always check with your vet if you are unsure of whether to give yours these tablets.

Crates are available from most pet supply stores. Look for these features when purchasing: No 5: - Large enough to allow the dog to stand, turn and lie down. How Long Do Westies Live? - I was out for a walk with my son Jonathan and Pepper our Westie Dog by the sea shore where we live. I met a neighbour called John who I hadn’t seen for ages. I was very surprised to see him on his own because he has a black Labrador and the 2 of them are inseparable. Naturally I enquired about Barney and his face dropped. I knew something was terribly wrong. His reply was that he had to put Barney down because he had developed cancer and it had come on so quickly. He didn’t want his friend to suffer. Non dog owners can’t understand and I feel that they are the losers of such love and loyalty. The news hurt Jonathan because he always would play with Barney and make such a fuss of him. It got me to thinking how long our Pepper would live to. The Westie in general should live to around 15 years if probably looked after and also if no serious health issue arise. He is now 6 years and I still can’t believe he is that old. Maybe it’s a sign of me getting old, because my kids seemed to have grown up in the blink of an eye. I give Pepper a big hug when I got home and he got a couple of extra treats also. Don’t want to take him for granted and will monitor his health checks with the proper grooming for the west highland terrier. He always looks like a little puppy again, every time he returns from the groomers. Have to also start building up the westie photos again.
