New Dog Flu Prompts
Concern For Dog Owners
A new dog flu,
which at the time of writing has spread to 11 US, states such as
New York and Florida is now causing concern among dog owners.
Although the possibility that the virus could also jump to
humans cannot be ruled out, scientists are urging calm
This
brand new virus and strain is a version of the flu common to
horses (aptly named Equine Flu) Similarly this canine flu is
highly contagious and sometimes deadly. This dog flu shows signs
similar to Kennel Cough, which affects the respiratory system,
which in turn can lead to other illnesses. Kennel Cough is not
normally fatal.
According to a
report by the University of Florida, this flu was detected first
among racing (greyhound) dogs in 2004 in Florida. Between
January and May 2005 there were respiratory disease outbreaks
among about 20,000 greyhounds at 20 tracks in 11 states as
reported. Samples from dogs at several racing tracks in Florida
revealed they had been exposed to dog flu. Tests also indicated
greyhounds in Arizona and one in Texas had also been exposed.
Experts have
stated that the public has need to panic, but to be vigilant.
The deadly canine flu that has been making domestic dogs and
racing greyhounds ill in the US jumped from horses in a “very
rare event”, say scientists.
The most
vulnerable will be the younger puppies and the older dogs. Cat
owners will be relieved that it has not been linked to their
animals.
Veterinarians
are therefore asking dog owners to be extra vigilant with their
pets. Symptoms include a listless behavior, not eating; a green
discharge around the nose and a cough that won’t seem to go
away. If in any doubt please visit your veterinarian.
