Introduction
This
book is a compilation of stories and thoughts from Westie Owners who
have bought my “Mad
About Westies!” Package, have joined our Newsletter “Westie
News!” or have
contributed to our forum.
The stories are basically as submitted as is
because they read better.
I
used to be one who only loved big dogs but was outvoted by my wife
and 2 sons and as a result ended up with our Westie called Pepper.
Now I am owned by him and he has won me over.
Email
me at: webmaster@madaboutwesties.com
with your feedback. I would love to hear from you.
I
wish you health and much peace of mind

Do you also have a story that you would like to share?
I would like to include it in the next volume. Full credit
will be given. Love to hear from you.

Hello
Jeff,
I
had the greatest westie; I named Wesley after I got him through the
rescue team. I actually got him from a couple in Springfield, Or
that had two that were not getting alone and wanted to find a home
for the one they called Mouse. Anyway, that's another story.
It's
late but I needed to let you know I enjoy your e-mails and will send
a picture as soon as I learn to scan it. Last October, my
Wesley got sick and after many visits to the Vet and then to
Critical Care and transfusions, he was diagnosed with Immune
Mediated Thom...and was bleeding inside.
The
blood was coming from front and back. I had him put to sleep.
I went on the Internet and found many articles about this terrible
fate and read many stories about others like Wesley that after 4
days from the time it hit, they were put down. It is late and
I just had to share with you.
I'm
72, retired and I'm still thinking my little companion is still
here. He was a charmer and I loved him and miss him so much.

Being
a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old
Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owner, his wife,
and their little boy were all very attached to Belker and they were
hoping for a miracle. I examined Belker and found he was dying
of cancer. I told the family there were no miracles left for
Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the
old dog in their home.
As we made arrangements, the owners told me they thought it
would be
good for the four-year-old boy to observe the procedure. They
felt he could learn something from the experience.
The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's
family surrounded him. The little boy seemed so calm, petting
the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he
understood what was going on.
Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.
The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any
difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after
Belker’s death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that
animal lives are shorter than human lives. The little
boy, who had been listening quietly, piped up, "I know
why."
Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his
mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation.
He said, "Everybody is born so that they can learn how to
live a good life - like loving everybody and being nice,
right?" The four-year-old continued, "Well, animals
already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as
long."

I
would like to introduce you to "Robbie "my West Highland
White Terrier, born on 23rd of October 1998 and came to me as a
rescue when he was just 7 months old and having 4 previous owners,
we are great pals,
One Sunday morning, there was a knock on the
door, a lady I know from my village asked me if I would take on a
rescue dog, a lapse of 18 months had past after loosing my old
Yorkshire Terrier of 19 years and with no pets for the 1st time in
my life I naturally said “yes”
Good she said, I will bring him here this
afternoon, I did inquire in the village and was told that you were
the right man for the job, After she went I never thought to ask her
what breed the dog was, what ever the breed I would give him a good
home,
As a small child I always loved the
“Scottie” dog which I called them in my childhood days, and have
always adored the breed,
And thought the time was right to get another dog that of a
westie,
That afternoon the lady
brought in his toys, then his basket, and then much to my delight a
West Highland Terrier of 7 months, and yes it was Robbie. He came to
me stood up on hind legs and kissed me, I was hooked, and from that
day on we have been inseparable,
To give a home to a dog will reward you in
life with more riches than you can ever hope for, as the love they
give to you in return is more than tenfold. It has always made me think how anyone could have
abandoned Robbie is beyond me, but I guess it was pure fate that he
came to me on that Sunday

I don't know if I'm using the
correct page, but I need to tell my story:
I
had two beloved dogs Coco & Zeye; I had to put them down
yesterday August 20th 2006. The story goes like this; Coco
came from a well to do family to my home at 8 weeks beautiful
Brown Lab, he had some health problems and also hip displeasea at
age 5 put still a very loving dog.
Zeye
I found once walking in the park, he was ducked tape at the mouth
and cuts all over his head, he was skin and bones, scared hungry and
very cold, I took him to the Vet he said that the best thing I could
do for him was to put him to sleep, I took him home and he lived
very happy with me for 4 years. He did get in trouble a few
times he ran out and bit a couple of people, him and Coco while on
the lich killed a dog that came up to them barking, well it was very
bad.
The Judge asked me to turn them in
to Animal Control or to put them down. I went to the Vet
yesterday morning and whit my heart full of pain I did put them
down, I stayed with them until their last breath, I talked to them
and told them how much I loved them and to please forgive me.
This was horrible, it is the worst
that anyone person that loves animals could do or feel, I hurt so
very much, I have cried so much; someone told me, we cry for
ourselves and because we miss what we don't have anymore, and
sometimes we become so selfish that we just want to hold on to
something that we need to let go.
Thank you for letting me share
Carmen
