3) READERS QUESTION: Posted on forum
Little
Basil is obsessed with digging - everywhere!
Our beautiful little 5-month-old Westie
boy, Basil, is so good; he's so well natured, really sociable,
friendly, welcoming and has some lovely unique traits.
A couple of questions for other owners:
1) Basil is obsessed with digging. After
a good old dig, Basil will be covered in soil and will have
swallowed some unidentifiable objects in the process (which he
normally vomits at a later stage). Apart from having to clean
him up regularly, he has destroyed part of our garden (luckily
he only has access to a small area - phew!) in the process and
worse still, and rather embarrassingly, made large holes in
other people's well-kept lawns.
He
seems to pick his area for digging by carefully sniffing around
the whole garden and then becoming obsessed with a particular
spot. When left unsupervised, he'll dig a really deep hole and
won't want to stop digging until something is found. He is very
good at this and seems to manage a huge area in just a few
minutes! In his own garden, he'll often bury his toys and
treats, but often forgets where it was he buried them!
Is this normal behaviour? If we are ok
about him doing this in our garden, should we allow it to go
ahead?
2)
His breath is sometimes really quite horrible smelling! It was
at its worst when we fed him tinned food. Feeding him dried food
has helped loads but he often won't touch it - meaning that
sometimes he won't eat for a day or so. We've tried breath
freshener biscuits, but these haven't really made much
difference.
Any tips?
Many thanks for any help with these
queries. Basil is our first ever dog (let alone Westie) and we
love him! He is so funny and quite naughty, but never violent or
horrible to any visitors or other dogs. He just gets so excited
when the doorbell goes or we come home from work. He'll jump up,
with his tail madly wagging for any special visitors and perform
some funny tricks on his back legs, making everyone laugh. When
his very favorite people come to visit or we come home, he gets
so excited that he wees himself!!!!! - whoops!
Best Wishes

Basil, Simon and Dave UK

Answer
Posted By Carol:
Simon
and Dave,
Welcome
to the world of terriers! I've never met one I didn't love nor
have I met one that didn't love to dig.
Our trainer made an excellent suggestion
to us about digging issues even though we expected it and hadn't
thought of the solution. She said we should develop a specific
place in the garden where it is permissible for the pup to dig.
She suggested we might outline an area with timbers or bricks
where the soil can be loosened. You may want to bury a few toys
or biscuit treats to get the little guys interest.
Any
time Basil is digging in that spot (remember to add new
"treasures" to the area often) praise him and tell him
he is a good boy. Whenever he is digging in areas where you
don't desire him to dig, teach him "leave it" and
remove him from that area to HIS digging area.
This
technique has worked quite well for us. I hope that is the
solution you are looking for to keep your garden safe.
Now
about the breath and food. Your Westie will be the healthiest if
he is getting the harder dry dog food rather than canned food.
Be sure that his teeth are in good shape and there isn't a
medical/dental problem causing the bad breath. Take a look at
his teeth and make sure a "baby" tooth that hasn't
fallen out isn't causing a dental problem. At 5 months, he
should be losing his baby or "milk" teeth if he hasn't
already done so.
Also, do you provide him with plenty of
items that are permissible for him to chew? Not only do they
need the chewing exercise, but the chewing also helps to keep
tartar from developing on their teeth. Consider getting Nylabone
chews if they are available in the UK but never use real animal
bones. As you may already know, they can splinter and cause
internal injuries.
Often,
at least here in the US, the retailers will have sample size
packets of the food to try without committing to a large
container of food he may not like. If that does happen, you may
want to consider donating the leftover food to your local
shelter.
Good luck to
you. I hope these suggestions are helpful.
Have a good weekend...

Carol
