3) READERS QUESTION!
a) Question Posted On the Forum: - Itchy Puppy
Posted By Andrea, Newfoundland, Canada
Hello everyone,
Having been a Westie fanatic for years, I finally got my first ever
Westie (and first ever dog) this past April. So far it has been a lot
of fun, and despite years of research and preparation, Westies are
always full of surprises.
My Westie, Milo is eight months old, and seems to be itching a lot lately.
We have eliminated wheat and corn from his diet through trial and error.
Peanut butter also seems to be a possible culprit, since we only recently
introduced it to him.
Due to the sudden onset of itching we changed Milo's food eliminating wheat,
corn and the pb all at once. After a few doses of antihistamine, Milo seemed
to get over it.
Besides these food items, Milo also seems to be irritated by clothes
detergent.
Has anyone had any similar problems with their Westies? Milo's skin does
not appear, red, flaky, and there does not seem to be anything wrong,
except for the itching. We have not changed detergents, or used any new
cleaners etc.
A groomer friend of mine suspects that Milo reacted to the peanut butter
we gave him, and may simply have become accustomed to scratching.
Milo tends to bite at his fur a little, so she thinks it may be more of a
bad habit rather than anything else. Milo is on Sentinel once a month, so
leas are not an issue...
Any thoughts?

Andrea,
Just a word about Milo's itching. If it is flea bite dermatitis,
a bite from one flea could cause itching. I, too, use Sentinal. While the product is great at stamping out the
lifecycle of fleas, it won't keep fleas from biting Milo. It merely controls the population
by making sure the flea that bites him cannot reproduce or lay fertile
eggs.
You may also need to add Advantage or some other flea repellant to the
regimen if he is outside where a flea from a squirrel or other wildlife
could find him.
If you are feeding a dry food without wheat, corn or beef, try adding
some type of oil (Omega 3; cod liver; other) to his food just to make
sure he isn't experiencing dry skin. Follow directions and don't use
too much or he may have a tummy upset. I would suggest keeping the
baths to a minimum and when you do bathe Milo, use a product that
is detergent and soap free.
Kenic makes a shampoo called Kalaya Emu Oil Shampoo that will not dry
out the skin. Their web site is:
ghttp://www.glo-marr-kenic.com/item74.htm
Before you decide that the scratching is a habit, I would suggest trying
to eliminate other possible causes as you are already doing. If it is
an obsessive-compulsive issue, the vet can recommend a medication,
but I would make that my choice of last resort.
There is a good chance time on a wheat-free diet and other supplements
will improve the situation. Depending on where you live, if Milo has
a seasonal grass allergy, you will notice the return of itchy Milo in
Spring.
Good luck to you and keep us posted on his progress. I've had an allergic
Westie before and I share your frustration at seeing him uncomfortable.

Thanks so much for your help Carol. I have already seen a big difference
in Milo since we changed his food. We changed it cold turkey without
any problems. There is nothing in the new food that he has not had
previously (it is a chicken meal, rice and oatmeal formula).
I will have to see what happens with regards to grass in spring time,
since he does seem to be very itchy after playing outside in the grass.
According to our breeder and his previous vet, Milo is allergic to
"shampoo for white dogs" or whiteners. Essentially those products
are bleaches, so the groomer we visit uses an all natural oatmeal
based shampoo. That is the only time we shampoo Milo.
Other than that, water seems to keep him pretty clean. If it is absolutely necessary, then of course we shampoo Very Happy
Thanks again,
Andrea

You are so welcome. I do hope the change in food helps. Milo is lucky to have someone who loves him and is willing to try everything to make him comfortable again.
Keep us posted on his progress and what finally provides him relief.
Take care,
Carol
